Missouri Feeder Calf Marketing Guide

Profit-Motivated, Individualist

  • These producers have the time and motivation to pursue new marketing and production innovations if they make money and if they can be accomplished as an individual rather than having to cooperate with others.
  • These producers are among the most progressive of cattle producers.
  • These producers are keenly interested in the industry and usually depend upon it for a large portion of their income.
  • One of the prime reasons they are involved in the cattle industry is that it offers the opportunity to operate a business as an individual, managing and marketing their products without interference from or cooperation with government or other segments of the industry.
  Livestock Auction Markets
• The number of cattle (all classes) sold on commission in Missouri averaged 125% of Missouri’s calf crop from 1996 to 2000.
• Missouri feeder calves continue to move predominately through auction markets because these markets have traditionally been the most cost effective way to market feeder calves from a large number of small producers.

Electronic Marketing and Satellite Auctions
Using satellite and video auctions is an option that is available today to beef producers. This marketing strategy provides a common place to purchase cattle that can serve a large geographical area of buyers and sellers.

This option may or may not best suit your operation, it is still a good resource for gathering information by seeing what other producers are doing. Web sites have different methods of sales and conditions associated with each particular company. Most companies have representatives that will work with you to get the pictures or videos of the cattle and setting up the contractual arrangements. It is very important to do your homework on the company; you may find out information concerning the history of the company or seek references from previous users.

The following links provide potential resources to see some electronic marketing alternatives. We do not endorse any of the links and you should spend considerable time researching and evaluating the company before you use one.
